NCP Blog: More S’mores, Please!

S’mores are one of my favorite treats to make outdoors in the summer. The melted chocolate, gooey marshmallow, and crispy crunch of the graham cracker is the perfect combination for me!

While there’s nothing like toasting marshmallows over a campfire, it’s easier than ever to make s’mores anytime. Many people have fire pits in the backyard, or even portable tabletop fire bowls. You can even make s’mores in the microwave!

National S’mores Day is celebrated on August 10 of each year. This week is the perfect time to talk about the tasty treat.

Where did s’mores come from?

The first printed recipe for s’mores dates back to 1927 and a guidebook published by the Girl Scouts of America, according to History Daily. The recipe calling for melty marshmallows placed between graham crackers and a chocolate bar was deemed so good that you’ll want “some more.”

It’s estimated that Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows each year- and 50% of those purchased are toasted for s’mores.

Here are some more fun facts about s’mores from the South Florida Reporter:

  • 31% of Americans make s’mores on a grill.
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan, hails as the city that eats the most s’mores.
  • 87% of Americans have tried a s’more.
  • The Hershey Company makes more than 373 million Hershey’s milk chocolate bars a year.  That’s enough to make 746 million s’mores!
  • 31% of Americans have only had a s’more cooked over a campfire, and 41% of people in metro cities haven’t even tasted a s’more before!
