NCP Blog: Beat the Heat at the Pool

We can all agree it’s officially hot, right? While I don’t enjoy the heat and humidity of summer, one activity that helps make the heat more tolerable is spending time in the water!

According to the CDC, swimming is the fourth most popular recreational activity in the United States, and the most popular activity for children and teens ages 7-17.

According to the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), there are 10.4 million residential pools in the United States! The country also has 309,000 public swimming pools.

Most homes with pools are in the southern and western regions, with Phoenix topping the list. Nearly 1 in 3 homes in Phoenix has a swimming pool, according to Pool Magazine. Swimming pools are also popular with homeowners in Florida and California. In fact, more than 40% of inground swimming pools are in those two states!

Fun fact: The largest pool in the world is in Egypt and covers 23.9 acres! The largest one in the United States is The Lagoon at Epperson in Florida. It opened in 2017 and is 7.5 acres.

What to pack for a day in the water

When you’re heading out, be sure to pack all the essentials! Here are some ideas:

  • Swimsuit
  • Beach Towels
  • Goggles, earplugs or nose clips
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks
  • Waterproof cases for your phone or other devices
  • Water shoes
  • Water toys
  • Wet/dry bag to put the wet swimsuits in when you’re done swimming
